Hiking in Gran Canaria

Coming to Gran Canaria you may think there’s not much to do. It’s a volcanic island so prob nothing interesting. WRONG! Each of Canary Islands has something special and extraordinary to offer.

The island is not very big but it has potential. I took only two trips around the island, yet there’s so much to see, so many twisted roads to take that I’m more than sure to go up in the mountains again.
These trips make you cut off from ordinary life and when you finally stop checking the time, you can start to enjoy the view, sense eucalyptus and pines and imbibe nature.

Here’s some photos from the last hiking trip to Roque Nublo – the highest peak on Gran Canaria.

Grand Canaria round trip

While travelling we imagine how certain places look like. Have some expectations and visions of what we want to do.
Some people look for touristic enclaves, artificially created for entertainment. Streets full of pubs, restaurants, little shops and night clubs. Beautiful white sandy beaches stock with European tourists lying next to each other like sardines in a can.

I came to Gran Canaria in search of peace and quiet. Charming little towns, beautiful views to contemplate and simply to enjoy life.

What I discovered is a cheap way of travel. Sleep in hostels, caves or tents , meeting people from all over the world brought to the same place for different reasons.
So answering to all questions “what is your plan? Where are you gonna WORK? What next?
My response is simple – travel, work in exchange for bed and food. Go to as many places as I can work at, meet new people and cultures, collect my experience and unforgettable memories :-)

Just came back from an island round trip. Had amazing tapas dinner on rocky entrance to the Puerto de Mogan, watching sunset. Drove through Tejeda to Artenara, where I slept in a cave. On 1777m above the sea level it may be cold (5⁰C), so the best way to keep us warm was to drink a bottle of canary rum, watching stars till 4 a.m. And a shower with such a view you cannot compare to anything.

Bit of sightseeing, twisted roads and views that take your breath away. Splashed in the ocean and tapas dinner with newly met hostel guests. Bottles of wine on the beach and long hours of exchanging experiences.

p.s. heard once “you have a great water pressure in the shower”. Not knowing how to respond, thanked as it was a compliment. After recent travels finally understood and appreciated  it :-)

Just an ordinary day

Moved from Roch’s friend flat to a Beach house. No swimming today. Whole coast is full of jellyfish.

Started looking for a job, which may not be easy. Especially in low season in Las Palmas. Still applied for couple positions and it made me feel better. After so intense day, there was a time for a walk along the coast and espresso, of course.
Time to unpack my bag and get some food. Just an ordinary day to enjoy :-)

Two broke girls keep their books, so decided to show you how travelling can be cheap and fun.

Always cost at the beginning are higher but take a look. I’ll be updating this post so you can experience it yourself.

39 E – 2 nights in a San Fernando hostal (the cheapest option if you don’t have anyone to sleep you over in Playa del Ingles)

17,5 E – Spanish pre-paid SIM card with Spanish no. (7,50 starter + recharge)

12 E – food (including eat out once)

5,6 E – bus from Maspalomas to Las Palmas (approx.60km/37 miles)

5,5 E – taxi to the beach house (walking distance)

20 E – fancy food shopping for two, including alcohol that I’m having right now ;-) +tapas
